SPF, the acronym that is typically found on sunscreen bottles, refers to Sun Protection Factor.  Accordingly, it defines a numerical rating system that indicates the level of sun protection provided by a particular sunscreen.  This is an FDA-mandated rating system that should be found on all sunscreens. 

The higher the SPF rating, the greater the amount of protection.  In other words, SPF 35 is better at sun protection than SPF 15.    The numerical system is obtained by comparing the sunscreen''''s protection to bare skin.  In other words, if it takes normal unprotected skin 1 hour to become red under the sun, how long would it take to become red with Sunscreen A.  If it takes twice as long, then the SPF is 2 (or two times unprotected skin).  In the case of an SPF 35, it takes 35 times longer to become red and burned than unprotected skin. 

SPF rating apply only to UVB rays.  They do not apply to UVA sun rays.  However, there are other important factors to consider when choosing a sunscreen.  Sunscreen should be gentle to the skin, stay on the skin, and not be too irritating or comedogenic to the skin.  Always reapply sunscreen if you are out of the house during the day as sunscreen will wear off .
