Microdermabrasion in Los Angeles

Microdermabrasion is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States.  Patients often request microdermabrasion in our Santa Monica office in order to reverse the effects of sun damage and oily skin.  Our office has three microdermabrasion machines that are chosen based on your skin type.  Most patients benefit from the Kare Diamond Microdermabrasion treatment which uses diamond microcrystals to exfoliate and resurface skin impurities.  If your skin is extremely oily, Dr. Karamanoukian may suggest a Radiant peel to complement the microdermabrasion treatment.

Microdermabrasion FAQ in Los Angeles

Does microdermabrasion hurt? No.  We actually have three different methods of microdermabrasion in our office and they do not cause pain.  Some patients may have some discomfort, especially if they have painful pimples and cysts.  The discomfort arises from the unclogging of the pores and cysts.

How long does a typical microdermabrasion take to perform in your Los Angeles office? Microdermabrasion is an effective procedure with minimal downtime that takes less than 30 minutes to perform.  We recommend that patients undergo a complete microdermabrasion procedure followed by interval visits spaced three to four weeks apart.  Your skincare regimen should be followed at home in addition to your regular microdermabrasion sessions.  Severe acne breakouts and cystic acne may require a more aggressive program that is combined with topical medications and / or chemical peels.

Does microdermabrasion work on acne scars and blackheads? Microdermabrasion actively exfoliates epidermal layers off of the skin and will help reduce active acne and inflammatory cysts, but will likely not improve acne scars.   Microdermabrasion should be used in conjunction with deeper treatments for acne scars such as laser, chemical peels, dermabrasion, and acne surgery.  Subcision is performed in many cases to reduce acne scarring.  Microdermabrasion alone will not reduce deep acne scars but will improve pigmentation from acne scars.

How long is recovery after microdermabrasion?  Recovery is relatively quick after microdermabrasion techniques.  Your recovery depends on the type of treatment that you have performed and the topical skin care regimen you are using.  We recommend that you avoid direct sunlight and wash your face daily.
