A study performed at the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo Department of Diagnostic Imaging evaluated three different imaging modalities; mammography, ultrasonography, and MRI in the identifying breast implant rupture in asymptomatic silicone breast implant patients. The results showed that MRI appears to be the best and most sensitive imaging modality for implant rupture.  Sensitivity and specificity for mammography was 20% and 89%; ultrasound 30% and 81%; and MRI 64% and 77%.  Sao Paulo Med J. 2004; Mar 4.

A study by Paetau et al. described the evaluation and diagnosis of capsular contracture and silicone breast implant rupture.  In the study, the authors noted the benefits of clinical examination, mammography, and MRI in the evaluation of breast implant rupture.  Paetau, AA et al.
