Eyelid Surgery in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills
Patients are often concerned about the appearance of their eyebrows, and upper and lower eyelids. Aging of the periorbital or eye area can result in fine wrinkles, hollowness of the eyes, bulging of eyelid fat, and a generalized appearance of aging. These characteristic patterns of aging may cause patients to feel exceedingly older than their apparent age. There are several effective options for eyelid rejuvenation that can improve eyelid wrinkles, bulging eyelid fat, hollowness of the upper and lower eyelids, circles around the eyes, and pigmentation around the eyes.

Eyebrow Lift / Brow Lift in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills
A browlift is performed to improve and to lift the eyebrow and forehead areas in order to achieve a more rejuvenated facial profile. As we age, the eyebrows begin to descend towards the margin of the eyelids. As this occurs, patients note increased wrinkling of the forehead, early tiredness and fatigue of the eyes after a full days work, and heaviness of the eyebrows and eyelids. In some cases, patients may have the appearance of sadness or drowsiness, despite having enough rest or sleep.
A browlift procedure can be done under intravenous sedation or under general anesthesia. In either case, small incisions are made in the forehead or scalp area to lift up the lateral aspect of the eyebrow and to fix it in a more superior location.
The procedure is generally well tolerated and causes several days of bruising and swelling after surgery. Within one to two weeks after the procedure, patients will begin to notice that their eyebrows have achieved a very natural position on the forehead and that there is less wrinkling of the forehead and eyelid skin. Heaviness of the eyelids is often improved through an eyebrow procedure.
Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert on browlift surgery and can perform the procedure under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia in conjunction with a board certified anesthesiologist. Our office is equipped with a state of the art and fully accredited operating room that adheres to the highest standards of patient safety. Procedures can be performed in an outpatient setting and there is no hospital admission required.
Upper Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles
Droopiness of the upper eyelid is a very common problem in patients of all ethnicities. Patients of Asian descent, Caucasian descent, or African-American descent all have similar problems with eyelid dropping and eyelid heaviness. Droopiness of the upper eyelid can cause increased fatigue and tiredness and may result in a prematurely aged look in the periorbital or eyelid region.
The technical term for eyelid surgery is known as blepharoplasty. In this procedure, excess skin and fat is removed from the upper eyelid using surgical techniques that are minimally invasive and that result in minimally noticeable scars.
Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert on upper eyelid rejuvenation including blepharoplasty surgery and designs the eyelid incision along the tarsal crease in order to minimize scarring and noticeability of the scar after surgery. The result is an improved appearance of the upper eyelid and a natural improvement in facial contour. The eyes appear to be more open and brighter.
In some cases, insurance may cover the cost of an upper blepharoplasty procedure if there is disturbance in the upper eyelid visual field. Dr. Karamanoukian can discuss these options with you during the consultation and refer you to an appropriate eye specialist in order to obtain preoperative testing. Dr. Karamanoukian works alongside opthalmologists who refer patients to him for surgical correction of the eyelids.
Blepharoplasty procedures are performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. In all cases, the highest standards of safety are ensured in our state of the art and AAAHC accredited ambulatory surgery room.
Recovery after blepharoplasty may take several days with concomitant bruising and swelling along the upper eyelid and lower eyelid. Results can be seen within several days. Patients are advised to wear protective sunglasses for at least one week after surgery.
Lower Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills
Lower eyelid surgery is also termed lower eyelid blepharoplasty. In this procedure, excess skin and fat is removed from the lower eyelid in order to tighten the mid face and the hollowness of the lower eyelid area.
This surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in an accredited surgical room. Dr. Karamanoukian performs traditional lower eyelid blepharoplasty using a subciliary or external incision; or transconjunctival blepharoplasty (where the incisions are hidden within the mucosa of the lower eyelid). The choice to do a traditional versus transconjunctival blepharoplasty depends on the amount of excess skin on the lower eyelid. Repair of lower eyelid skin droopiness and fat bags can be accomplished in one setting using this minimally invasive surgical technique.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis in an accredited surgery center using local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or intravenous sedation. Dr. Karamanoukian is familiar with the latest techniques in eyelid rejuvenation and can discuss these options with you during your consultation.
