Hand warts are caused by a benign virus that is passed on from person to person through direct contact. The warts are commonly known as verrucae vulgaris and represent a benign condition of the skin. In some cases, the warts can become widespread and difficult to treat. Young patients often develop warts through direct contact and physicians are faced with the difficult challenge of treating these warts without surgery.
In a recent study in Dermatologic Surgery, physicians at the Department of Dermatology in Hanau Germany reported excellent responsiveness of warts to a laser treatment known as Pulse Dye Laser. In the United States, this laser is typically known as the V Beam laser. The laser utilizes the 595 nm laser pulse. In the study, recalcitrant or stubborn warts were treated with the laser beam and patients reported a high degree of wart clearance with minimal complications. In fact, about 15 percent of patients acheived complete clearance of their stubborn warts within one treatment. One patient, of the 73 patients succesfully treated, had a relapse of warts. The pulse dye laser works well with all skin types and ages.
